The materials we create follow along with the same (or very similar) order as popular phonics programs such as Jolly Phonics. This is a tried and tested order, and the programs are already excellent. Our materials are to supplement their teachings.
You may sometimes find the groups are slightly different and you might get a sound earlier or later than the program you are following. If this is the case, it is highly beneficial to the students to use our materials the week you have introduced all of the sounds. That way they are getting to review and also mix in some new sounds.
NEVER give them materials with sounds that you are yet to cover.
1, 2, 3, beginning, middle end is a great drill to get kids reading and writing simple CVC words. The student will point at the numbers and say “1, 2, 3!”, then point at them again and chant “beginning, middle end!”
This worksheet can used as a reading and colouring activity to reinforce a similar lesson that you have done on the board in class.
This is the basics of using the reading finger and should be reinforced continuously.
Mini books are a great activity that will have the students, cutting, folding, reading and colouring. This book includes sounds from group 1 and can be enjoyed in classes of all sizes.
In larger classes I recommend doing it as a class. Have the students waiting for the teacher to make a fold, then they replicate it. Do this for every step until they are ready to make the cut. Then you can hand out the scissors.
For more info on how to fold the books you can watch our how to video below.
Who needs a text-book when you have a mini book. Get crafty, trace the new sounds then colour it in.
Uwwwww pizza! There’s a pizza for everyone and now you can add a sound pizza into the mix. This is a reading, colouring, cutting and sticking activity for this group of sounds that also reviews shapes.
Colour everything and then cut out the sounds in the shapes and stick them onto the pizza. Try not to get too hungry!
Here is a great song to accompany this lesson.
Cutting, sticking, colouring and learning. this activity covers sounds, shapes, creativity AND pizza!
For this activity you need scissors and split pins.Â
The students cut out the 3 circles and put them together using the split pin. For younger students, it may be better to make the holes for them, so they don’t rip the paper.
When the wheel is created, they can either make the words the teacher asks for or they can make words and try and read them to themselves, their friends or the teacher.
Remember: Not all words will make sense, so for more advanced students you can ask them if it is a real word or a nonsense word.
Â
These wheels let your diddy ones create and read. Remember, not every word you can read makes a real word.
Sound snip is a lesson that incorporates our new sounds. Students can begin by using their reading fingers and chanting their 1, 2, 3 beginning, middle, end chant.
You can split this lesson into 3 parts.
Part 1: Cut out, arrange the sounds and then have the students point to the correct sound the teacher asks for.
Part 2: Students say “teacher_____, what word?” the teacher says a word and the students make it.
Part 3: as a wrap up, leave the students to their own devices to make any word they like. You can go around the students and have them use their reading fingers and read the words they are making.
The students love this one as it is like solving a puzzle.
A great way to wrap up a unit. Have the students cut out the sounds and make words.
